Emailmeform new improvements

I work on www.emailmeform.com as one of the senior programmers, and Today ( 25th August 2009 ) is a big day as the site will undergo some major improvements and changes.

One of the change is that a the new design will finally be put up. This new graphical design is much better than the old one, with more functionality and a more beautiful color scheme.

We will also upload the new versions of some of files of the very core of emailmeform. Namely the file that is processing form submissions, as well as some of the files of the Control Panel.

Me, Troy, Matt and the rest of the web team are hoping that there will be no downtimes nor service interruptions, and we will do our best to ensure this. However, as with any changes a little bit of risk remains, so if any user experience any kind of problems, please post here or send me an email about it: alex@amicgames.com

I will be online and work to fix all the problems reported.

The nofollow rel tag, coming back to bite the bloggers butt

I saw that most bloggers have activated the rel="nofollow" tag protection on their blogs, in order to tell search engines not to follow the links in the comments.

While this doesn't stop comment spam at all, ( because spammers usualy do comment spam to get visitors, not high Page Rank, so the nofollow tag doesn't stop visitors from following the link ) it is used - as many people think - to help Search Engines identify blogs and give them a lower ranking in search results.

We all know that blogs usually have a high Page Rank in Google. Because of this, is very easier for blog pages to show up high in the results, for many terms; however Google considered this "Blog noise" and it tried in many ways to fight it.

And with the nofollow tag it found the solution, using the trick of the mouse who gives a bell as a gift to the cat, for his own hidden benefit, Google gave bloggers the nofollow tag to use on their blogs to prevent links in comments from getting an increase in page rank.

Now Google can easily identify the blogs by their use of the nofollow tags, and give them a light decrease in results.

As any decent blog owner will use protection against automated spam ( that litle images boxes with text or numbers ), and manually review and delete unrelated or abusive posts every once in a while, I don't see any use for the nofollow tag other than an egoistic drive to keep down the Page Rank on the sites of the friends that are posting comments.

Alexa Toolbar playing tricks

I decided today that I want to download and install Alexa Toolbar. I tought that this would be a good way to see what sites have more traffic and what less.

I went to Alexa Toolbar download page, and clicked on the Install Button button in the right side of the page, using Internet Explorer.

The download started, but stopped at 99% with the error:

The Internet Explorer cannot download Alexainstaller.exe from the client.alexa.com

The connection with the server was terminated abnormally.

Note: I always wondered why the text inside the error message boxes is not selectable. Many people contact support, or someone when encountering errors and they need to provide the error; so it would have been normal that the error message is selectable and available for copyng to clipboard.

I tried it again and again and again for the same result. Each time it stoped at 99%.

Well, Internet Explorer sucks I tought. Let's download the file with Firefox, then I run it and it will install inside explorer. I opened Firefox, and proceed to download.

But, the *clever* Alexa site saw that I am using Firefox and it would not le me download it, with the error message "Browser Version Not Supported" .
I tried the Install the Alexa Toolbar at the bottom of the page but it gave me a server error.

Grr.. I don't want stupid software working on my machine. So I changed my mind about the Alexa Toolbar...
